On Saturday 7 May, the Honda RYA Youth RIB Championship (HYR) regional finals will begin in Northern Ireland, with 12 further finals set to be held before the winners face off at the national final at Southampton Boat Show on Sunday 18 September 2016. Comprising of 8-12 and 13-16 age categories, the HYR is Britain’s leading programme introducing kids to powerboats and training them to be safe, proficient drivers and excellent boat handlers. Now celebrating its 15th year, and having seen over 5,000 young powerboaters compete in 2015, the event, sponsored by Honda and Highfield, allows Rigid Inflatable Boat (RIB) drivers to demonstrate their skills with the goal of winning a Highfield 460 or a Honwave T40 for their club. Tapp is back – Sparks will fly – ThunderCat Racing Fistral

Just when everyone thought James Tapp, a serial winner in the UK ThunderCat series had retreated to a deckchair on the beach, he has been lured out of retirement by Multispark Racing team owner Dave Sheldon. We run a two boat team, unfortunately our driver, Gary Tolman who normally drives the #61 boat is on a ‘Bus training course’ during the Fistral Event. I thought it would ‘spice things up’ to invite James into the Multispark team, for a guest appearance. Tapp’s teammate will be Bligh Julius. The drivers had a ‘battle royale’ last year for the RYA ThunderCat British Championship, which was only decided on the final day’s racing in Newquay. The quietly spoken father of two told me this afternoon, Thanks to Dave, I’m back in a ThunderCat again! My wife Sophie doesn’t think I’m fit enough, but…

Palfreyman aims at UIM F2 Gold

Back in the day, Great Britain boasted a plethora of successful circuit powerboat racers that competed and won on the World stage. The names ‘tripped off the tongue’, Spalding, Hill, Percival and Jones to name a few. Matt Palfreyman from Lancashire, is a ‘chip off the old block’ from those former British racers. Taking a gradual progression from racing in the junior classes, Palfreyman moved into F4 as soon as he was old enough and then started to compete in the H2o Racing backed F-4S series in 2010, winning the championship in 2011 and taking the runners up spot in 2012. Last year, he competed in the UIM F2 World Championship and took the Silver Medal. His ‘hard charging’ racing style has enthralled spectators.   I have to race like that, I never do well in qualifying and it is…

Stanley Gibbons Investment Powerboat Racing Open Day – Guernsey

When organisers talk about bringing Offshore Powerboat Racing to the public, they normally think about how the race course should be laid out. The GPA does account for that with our Stanley Gibbons Investment racing series, but we thought it would be a good idea to invite the local people on Guernsey to see the race boats close up and chat to the drivers and navigators. Yesterday, my club held an ‘Open Day’ in Saint Peter Port which started at lunch time and saw a great turnout of boats and the general public. There were competitions; local racer, Sean Homer, won a VHF radio, which should help him cut down on his phone bills, Prime Elements donated hoodies and Breda was won by the winners and bought by the losers. The children who attended, took advantage of the ‘Face Painting’…
