Offshore Legend Tim Powell has passed away

Tim Powell passed away last night. He died peacefully at home. Tim Powell entered the world of powerboating almost by accident. It was in the mid-1960s when in the bar of the London nightclub Annabele’s – Tim’s regular hostelry in those days – that he was offered the three-year old Jaguar-powered Tramontana II on the basis that it had a large sponsorship deal in the offing from Esso. The deal was done but sponsorship was purely a marketing ruse that Tim later found to be false, through his many family connections with the oil giant. Together with his old pal Norman Barclay he entered the 1967 Daily Express International offshore race between Cowes and Torquay. The pair finished mid-field after being almost asphyxiated by a broken exhaust manifold. Until now Tim’s motor sport experience centred on the Jaguar Saloon Car…

P1 SuperStock expands its horizons

The organisers of the P1 SuperStock UK Championship have confirmed 4 of their race venues for 2017. With 3 of those to be held in England, Scotland and Wales, (Scarborough, Greenock and Milford Haven) it’s interesting to see a trip to Denmark on the calendar, the first race in June for the P1 SuperStock teams will be the city of Aalborg. Roy Mantle from P1 told me this afternoon; This is a great opportunity to ‘showcase’ our Championship in Scandinavia for the first time. Our chief operating officer Robert Wicks feels that the opportunity to expand the series to take in a round in mainland Europe is a very positive step forward for the series. Aaalborg Mayor, Thomas Kastrup-Larsen is also upbeat; Hosting a P1 event provides us with a wonderful opportunity to present Aaalborg as a cultural and vibrant event…

The Guernsey Powerboat Association (GPA) are well advanced in their planning of 3 UIM international championships to be held on the Channel Island in September. Already behind the Championships are a impressive list of Event Partners including the government backed Visit Guernsey, Condor Ferries and the Guernsey Sports Commission. Entries for the Event are looking strong too, with 8 intentions to enter  UIM Class 3A even before the GPA has posted the official Entry form. Deb Sauvarin who is on the Guernsey2017 organising committee told me; The support we are getting on the Island for the Event is so positive. Everyone here wants to see Guernsey2017 be a great success and show off our amazing Island to teams from abroad. Our…

Priddy – ‘We will launch our round the world record attempt in October’

Alan Priddy has today confirmed that Team Britannia will launch their round the world record bid in October. The decision comes after two further technical issues were discovered in December, both of which have now been resolved. Priddy commented on the news; The boat is coming on in leaps and bounds, but last month we identified two additional minor problems. These were only discovered following the operation to turn the hull over, lifting it out of the special upside down jig it had been sitting in. As soon as she was turned our amazing builder discovered two further minor issues, which because of the Christmas shut down, could not be resolved immediately. This put pressure on the timetable we were working to and would have pushed the start date toward the edge of the weather window, possibly making for a…

Ryan nominated for ‘Afloat Sailor of the Year 2016’

John Ryan with his Hibernia Racing crew of Philip Fitzgibbon, Sean McNamara and Denis Dillon shattered the Round Ireland powerboat record last year with a time of 12 hours 54 minutes and 24 seconds. Ryan’s FPT powered ALLBLACK SL44 hull was a strong favourite for Cowes Torquay Cowes honours last September, only for mechanical gremlins to rob his team of more success. Recognising Ryan’s record, afloat.ie have nominated him for their Irish ‘Afloat Sailor of the Year 2016’ award. Ryan’s Record Breaking Team They have picked out 22 individual sailors and pairings who have excelled in their respective disciplines, be it offshore, dinghy, cruise or powerboating.
