OPA Racing and Powerboat P1 have added another venue to their American Power Boat Association (APBA) Offshore Championship in 2019.
The Great Lakes Grand Prix which has been organised by John Carbonell’s Super Boat International (SBI) for the last 10 years will count as the 5th round in next year’s APBA Championship.
Rick Wright, the coordinator of the Great Lakes Grand Prix for the LaPorte County Convention & Visitors Bureau said:
There are just 35,000 people in Michigan City, so the people are coming from all over to enjoy this event for the weekend.
The people come here to watch the races and the racers are treated like rock stars.
We have spent a lot of time and effort building this race.
So it was a pleasure being asked to be part of this series.
This is obviously another huge blow to SBI who are also in competition to stage the Key West ‘World Championships’ next season from OPA who have partnered with Race World Offshore (RWO) to tender for the ever popular racing week in November.
However, SBI’s seasonal message on their social media page was upbeat:
We are getting set for a great new year of racing!
Thank you all for the wonderful support over the years, and we look forward to being on top of the game in 2019.
In the meantime, buckle up, stay tuned, and enjoy the holidays!
