It’s a Multispark 1-2

Making a ‘guest appearance’ for the Multispark Racing Team, 2015 World Champion, James Tapp showed that he hasn’t lost his speed or the ‘will to win’ here at Fistral Beach in Cornwall. Tapp with co-driver Scott Brown won all of the heats they competed in, although in the final, it was their Multispark team mates Bligh Julius and Charlie Hatfield who got the edge after Tapp nearly ejected Brown. A second place in the final and heat wins were enough to secure Round 3 of the Microlink ThunderCat Racing Championship for Tapp and Brown. Julius was contented with his second place, particularly as he split his good prop in one of the earlier heats. Rob Davies and Darren Phillips driving Microlink – Ahmad Tea, had an excellent day. They took 4 heat wins and a third place in the final giving them…

Fistral Beach – ThunderCat ‘King of the Surf’

Competitors make the journey West this weekend to compete in their first ‘Surf Event’ of the season at Fistral Beach in Cornwall, for rounds 3 & 4 of the 2016 Microlink ThunderCat Racing Championship. Last year the Event was one of the roughest in memory, as just 5 boats survived to compete in the Sunday afternoon Final, this year the surf is predicted to be slightly kinder. That should be welcome news for ‘Galaxy Girl’ team member, Ria Pandey, who will be making her ThunderCat Racing debut with Jo Foxx. Ria recently joined the British Army – Royal Signals Reserve, has rowed for the Thames Rowing Club, completed Half Marathons ‘barefoot’, ran a full Marathon, tackled a 100 mile ‘London Prudential’ bike ride and has signed on for an Ultra Marathon this October. Mark Lloyd will be travelling to the…

Tapp is back – Sparks will fly – ThunderCat Racing Fistral

Just when everyone thought James Tapp, a serial winner in the UK ThunderCat series had retreated to a deckchair on the beach, he has been lured out of retirement by Multispark Racing team owner Dave Sheldon. We run a two boat team, unfortunately our driver, Gary Tolman who normally drives the #61 boat is on a ‘Bus training course’ during the Fistral Event. I thought it would ‘spice things up’ to invite James into the Multispark team, for a guest appearance. Tapp’s teammate will be Bligh Julius. The drivers had a ‘battle royale’ last year for the RYA ThunderCat British Championship, which was only decided on the final day’s racing in Newquay. The quietly spoken father of two told me this afternoon, Thanks to Dave, I’m back in a ThunderCat again! My wife Sophie doesn’t think I’m fit enough, but…

Stuart Croxford – ThunderCat competitor

The ThunderCat Event held at Bournemouth last weekend, was not only a success on the water, it served to remind me why I continue to follow the UK inflatable catamaran series with such passion. I had a beer and a chat with Stuart Croxford, a ThunderCat racer the night before the Event and he told me about his racing plans and other objectives for the 2016 season with Team Endeavour. Anything I could write in a note book or record on my phone that night couldn’t tell the story better than this article from blesma.org. Stuart Croxford, an amputee, Blesma Member, and Project Manager of Team Endeavour Racing, is leading the charge into ThunderCat racing for those who’ve been hurt in combat. “The only real negative is getting in and out of the boat, which can be tricky with one leg,” says Stuart, who…

Jo Foxx – Rookie ThunderCat Racer and Galaxy Girl

Jo Foxx went through extensive ThunderCat training to enable her to race in 2016 and she made her racing début last weekend at Bournemouth. 35 year old Jo, originally from Poland, now lives and works in London, plying her trade as a fitness manager at the Surrey Docks Watersports Centre. Jo has completed several Marathons and Triathlons and was the 2015 ‘Supreme Galaxy Girls Champion’. Tim Tapping and I met the ‘New Star’ in ThunderCat Racing last Friday, we wished her the best of luck and monitored her progress throughout the Fortitudo Property supported weekend. I thought it would be good to have a ‘catch up’ with Jo today and ask her a few questions about her first event. JM: You were slightly concerned about your first race in the ‘Galaxy Girls’ ThunderCat boat, how was it when you got…

Haggis Hunters ThunderCat Team make a quick exit

David Finlayson and Mike Littler thrilled the crowds at Bournemouth last weekend after they ejected from their ThunderCat during the Fortitudo Property supported event. David a proud Scott, said afterwards, It’s lucky I wasn’t wearing my kilt – The spectators on the beach would have got a real show! Thanks to  Mike Powell for the photo sequence.

UK ThunderCat Racing – Bligh’s Bournemouth blitz

Rounds one and two of the 2016 UK ThunderCat Racing Championship were settled in Bournemouth today. The event was supported by Offshore Racer, Ricard Carr’s Fortitudo Property company. Carr told me, It is great to see so many competitors and spectators at the event this early in the season. I’m really pleased to support this event and am encouraged to the see the passion of the competitors. The final heats of the M-Shape discipline were run with over night leader Bligh Julius holding  on to his advantage. I split my best prop yesterday and was in a dilemma of what to use today. Dave Harwood of Steel developments told me that it was the perfect opportunity to test other propellers today. It ended up with Team Multispark M-Shape One – Two, Gary Tolman and Scott Brown took an extremely well earned silver, considering…

UK ThunderCat racers have an early season start in Bournemouth

The 2016 UK ThunderCat Racing Championship got off to an early start in Bournemouth today with an event supported by Fortitudo Property. Flat calm seas greeted the 19 strong fleet, which ensured fast racing and with that speed came flips and mechanical issues. First to withdraw were the Galaxy Girls, (Lynsay Crellin and Jo Foxx) with a broken gear casing while Kingfisher Fire & Security, 51 Racing and Multispark #61 all gave their crews an early bath. Continuing his winning run from last season was Bligh Julius in Multispark #33. He positively dominated the M Shape circuit heats whilst his 2015 rival James Tapp looked on from his deckchair content with his retirement from racing. Young Connor Blackman driving Ragworm put in a career best with second overall, while Rob Davies and Darren Phillips took the bronze in their new…
