Contrasting fortunes for UIM F2 Lady Racers in Finland

The 2016 UIM F2 World Championship has 2 very quick Lady Drivers competing for honours this year. Bimba Sjöholm from Sweden and Norway’s Mette Brandt Bjerknæs both travelled to Lake Peurunkajarvi in Finland with high hopes of doing well in the first of a seven round Championship. Sjöholm was racing under the new BRM (Boat Race Management) umbrella of Dean Stallard and Steve Kerton, while Bjerknæs arrived in Finland with a brand new David Moore F2 hull. Whilst pre-season testing in Sweden had gone well for Bjerknæs under the watchful eye of team mate and 2015 UIM F2 World Champion Pierre Lundin, the race weekend was far from favourable. The first race of the season didn’t go as planned. We struggled with motor problems all weekend and never made the race. Sjöholm’s weekend didn’t get off to a good start either, a barrel roll…

UIM F2 Grand Prix of Finland – History is made at The Wacky Races

F2 Team Association / Chris Davies There have only ever been a handful of films made about powerboat racing but if Sergio Leone had ever to direct another ‘The Good, the Bad and the Ugly’, it might have looked like what happened at the opening round of 2016 UIM F2 World Championship. So lets start with the ‘Good’ and what a story that could make after the youngest ever driver to race in the UIM F2 World Championship wins a Grand Prix at his first attempt. Eighteen year old Alberto Comparato had driven an exceptional race all weekend and had initially finished outside the top three. My father had told me that all he wanted was for me to get the new DAC home in one piece, so you can imagine how he now feels after I was awarded the top spot.…

Hagin hoping his Molgaard can run in light winds during UIM F2 Grand Prix of Finland

F2 Team Association / Chris Davies With the breeze beginning to calm down, the advantage had certainly swung to those drivers who were using Molgaard hulls during qualifying for the UIM F2 Grand Prix of Finland. One of them was the quietly spoken young German driver Stefan Hagin. Over the winter he had gone back to the Molgaard factory, where Christian and his team had reworked the decks and sponsons. We took it to the recent race in Brodenbach in Germany and it ran perfectly. I was actually getting some brilliant starts there, I even out dragged Rupp Temper, who is known for his quick reactions off the dock. He will have the UIM F2 World Champion sat alongside him on the start pontoon for tomorrows race and is not sure what to expect, I really don’t know how Lundin…

Edin edges out Lundin for UIM F2 Pole

F2 Team Association / Chris Davies Twenty days ago we collected the Molgaard from the paint shop. A delighted Erik Edin commented after he took his first ever UIM F2 World Championship pole position here in Peurunka, Finland. I had a short race back home in Sweden, which we used as a shake down test and to be honest I couldn’t believe the speed I was seeing. Last night during the Midnight Speed run he recorded 193Kmph and admitted that he really didn’t have a clue that this brand new hull could be that quick. We are still trying different propellers because we are unsure just how well it will get away from the start pontoon. This boat has really surprised me and I hope to discover a few more of its secrets during tomorrow mornings free practice. Keeping a…

Lundin blitzes F2 Speed Run

Pierre Lundin’s speed of 194km was more than good enough to secure the fastest time on Lake Peurunkajarvi, Finland this evening. Lundin’s closest challengers were Erik Edin and Uvis Slakteris who hit 193km. Allex Carella and Konstantin Ustinov both achieved 191km. The Speed Run was robbed of seeing Lundin’s team mate, Mette Brandt Bjerknæs’ brand new Moore hull making a run when her OptiMax 200XS developed mechanical issues just before.

Alberto Comparato makes his F2 Debut

F2 Team Association / Chris Davies Alberto Comparato will make his UIM F2 World Championship debut in Peurunka, Finland. Having been the UIM F4 World Champion for the past two years the young Italian admitted that his father is more nervous then he is. Fabio Comparato, who raced in the UIM F1H2O series from 1999 till he retired in 2010, said, This is a big step but we think he’s ready for it. We all know that the next three races will be steep learning curve for him but the teams aim is to get as much seat time for him as possible. By racing here this weekend Comparato Jnr. will become the youngest ever UIM F2 competitor at eighteen years old.
