At 75 – Fabio Buzzi is still setting records

Fabio Buzzi set the marine media alight this week when it was announced that he had set yet another record.

On Wednesday he set a diesel powered World Speed Record of 277.515 Km/h on Lake Como.

The attempt was verified by 2 Guinness World Record officials and as another multi speed record holder said to me this morning, ‘it will be interesting to see if the UIM ratify it at some stage’.

Offshore racer Christian Toll and I had the pleasure of seeing Buzzi’s new hydroplane at the FB Design HQ in Brianza last summer.

Over lunch Buzzi told us of his plans for the hydroplane and the eventual speed he hoped to attain.

Born in January 1943, the Italian was aware of his age and made light of it with some dark humour, but he was confident that he could beat his own record set back in 1992.

This week, he did indeed beat it, in style.

Fabio Buzzi is a true legend.
