Powerboat Racing World

Colemans are red hot in the Mumbai sunshine

The British brother and sister pairing of Sam and Daisy Coleman will go into tomorrow’s final race in Mumbai looking for a hat trick of victories in the inaugural NEXA P1 Powerboat India Grand Prix of the Seas that brought world class powerboat racing to India for the first time. They followed up their success in yesterday’s qualifying session, that saw them edge out fellow-Brits James Norvill and Charlie Parsons-Young by a 1/100thof a second, to secure pole position in today’s opening 15-lap race, by winning in impressive style. Despite victory in the second race of the afternoon with a dominant performance on the unique closed race track in Mumbai’s sweeping bay, the Colemans will need their team-mates in the other Baleno RS Booster Jets boat to play their part in tomorrow’s final race if they are to return home…

Special Awards – UIM Awards Giving Gala

UIM Hall of Fame Guido Cappellini The first inductee into the UIM Hall of Fame, Guido Cappellini began his racing career on four wheels in karting, winning the 135cc Italian Championship in 1981 and 1982 and the European Championship for 135cc, also in 1982. After switching to boating, he took first place in the S850 Class at the 100 Miglia del Lario, won the F3 category at the Six Hours of Paris in 1983 and finished fifth overall in the 1985 F3 Inshore World Championship. However, it was in F1 that he made his reputation as one of the greatest of all time. A man who stands head and shoulders above the great and the good of F1 with 10 World Championship titles, 70 Pole Positions and 62 race wins. A man who has made an indelible mark on the history of powerboat racing and who is a true giant…

Bobin – Britain’s World Champion – UIM Awards Giving Gala

26 year old Jack Bobin is probably one of the most modest World Champions you could ever wish to meet. On his first time ever in Monaco to receive his Class 3A plaudits at the UIM Awards Giving Gala tonight, Bobin quietly said to me, ‘I’m just overwhelmed by this town’. Followers of Bobin have been ‘overwhelmed’ by his driving prowess in an offshore Phantom 19 G hull. Making light of the sometimes hellish waters in Tvedestrand, Norway last year, Bobin with co-driver Barry Culver became only the second British UIM Class 3 team to prevail on Norwegian waters in a World Championship. Bobin is attending the Gala at Salle des Etoiles this evening with partner Katie Sirdifield, his mum Elaine and 2 sisters Amy and Mary. ‘Are you going to mention my Dad, Kerry in your article John’? ‘I think he generates enough publicity on his own’,…

Superfan Silvia – UIM Awards Giving Gala

Attending the 2017 UIM Awards Giving Gala in Monaco this weekend is 22 year old Silvia Borgonovi. I caught up with the stylish Italian powerboat racing ‘superfan’ at the Salle des Etoiles this morning to chat about her love of the sport. Chatting to her is easy, as her English is perfect and she is just as comfortable conversing in German, Spanish or Portuguese. It shouldn’t come as any surprise then that Silvia is a full time University student majoring in languages. Silvia is in the principality this weekend with her father, Giacomo, who was recently re-elected chairman of the Formula Committee, is a member of UIM’s Cominsport and a former Italian Powerboat Federation (FIM) circuit president. Giacomo has been taking his daughter to events and races since she was 6 months old and Silvia explained to me; The reason I am such a fan was…

Mr Xin Chongjie, president of the highly successful Chinese conglomerate Bund Holding Group and Mr Dario Calzavara, managing director of the renowned Italian specialised engineering company Terra Modena Mechatronic, revealed details of this significant engineering achievement at today’s press conference in Monaco, hosted by Dr. Raffaele Chiulli, the president of the Union Internationale Motonautique (UIM), ahead of its eighth Awards Gala Dinner to be held tonight. The project to develop and produce the China Bund EIPS, which will be the engine of choice for the UIM-H2O Nations Cup World Series, has taken two years of research and development at Terra Modena Mechatronic’s engineering facility in Reggio Emilia in northeast Italy…

Mumbai Welcomes World Championship Powerboat Racing

India enjoyed its first taste of world class powerboat racing today as the qualifying session kicked off the three day NEXA P1 Powerboat Indian Grand Prix of the Seas in Mumbai. Spectators around the natural amphitheatre of Mumbai’s Back Bay and millions of viewers of Sony ESPN’s live television coverage watched the fleet of 12 P1 Panther race boats set their qualifying times to determine the starting line-up for tomorrow’s opening day of racing. It was an outstanding day for Welsh powerboat racers with the current UK SuperStock champions from Pembrokeshire and the reigning USA SuperStock champions from Newport leading the field with just one hundredth of a second separating them. With less than two seconds covering the top four boats, it promises to be a monumental battle over the three races taking place this weekend. The brother and sister…

Daisy’s Delight in Mumbai – NEXA P1 Powerboat Qualifying

2016 British P1 SuperStock Champions, Daisy and Sam Coleman showed their speed in Mumbai, India today during qualifying for the NEXA P1 Powerboat Indian Grand Prix of the Seas by grabbing Pole Position. The Welsh duo edged out James Norvill and Charlie Parsons-Young by one hundredth of a second. ‘Baleno RS Booster Jets’ driver Sam Coleman was delighted and cautious in equal measure; I’m well aware that in tomorrow’s race conditions, with 12 boats fighting it out on the race track, it will be a very different affair, but Daisy and I will be analysing our performance tonight to go even quicker tomorrow.
